Group 1
Group 1 chose to elaborate an action plan for the following Vision Statements:
Development of "double helix system", developing both skills and academic learning
Passionate, motivated and accountable teachers
Summary of Idea
To develop public/private partnerships in terms of collaboration between industry and educational institutes, with the purpose of creating a "double helix system" a PPP needs to be in place to better understand the employability issues around education and training.
Outcomes
- With the mushrooming of private education provision, there needs to be some form of benchmarking/standardisation.
- The training of teachers is a big problem in India and long overdue for an overhaul. In technical colleges, teachers have not been retrained for 20 years. The idea will signal an advance in continuous professional development.
- This scheme would create an exchange programme/knowledge transfer between industry and educational institutions to establish what these employability issues are and how to address them.
- This scheme would help to create self-confidence in trainees which will stand them in good stead for their working lives.
- The scheme will also instil self-confidence in the teaching faculty. By getting teachers involved in an industrial exchange you provide them with tangible evidence of, allow them to see how important their job is.
Action Plan
- The group would seek to generate the interests of students in order to explore the potential of the idea through a pilot project.
- As a public private partnership, funding would come from a mix of public and private sources.
Group 2
Group 2 chose to elaborate an action plan for the following Vision statements:
Development of "double helix system", developing both skills and academic learning
Passionate, motivated and accountable teachers
Summary of Idea
The education system should provide a mix of academic knowledge and useful employable skills with interconnections between them allowing movement from either of these strands to the other.
Outcomes
- Creation of skilled manpower certified to international standards in emerging areas such as telemedicine operator, It enabled services, financial services, healthcare, legal services, media.
- Standards, systems and processes to support the above. Develop a suitable ....design for this.
- Change the stigma attached to vocational education through institutionalising as part of an academic experience e.g. After doing a law degree, you have to work in a practice to qualify for a degree.
- Sharing of best practice e.g. in the way fashion students visit successful fashion houses.
Action Points
- Changing the mindsets of parents and opinions formed by prospective students.
- Secure sponsorship for a feature film that conveys this message.
- Create levels for major occupations/academic progression.
- Develop delivery models that assure quality with internships built in; the learning institute has an enterprise that markets these skills; special capacity building programmes for teachers and orientation programmes for the prospective learners.
- Establish a "skills unit" that will market best practice.
