Summary: This paper discusses the fact that in recent years, the debate on the knowledge economy has drawn more attention to vocational education. Moreover, it argues that state policies in technical and vocational education (TVE) are also motivated by other factors. More specifically, TVE is seen as a means of providing a second chance to secondary school dropouts, offering an alternative to university education, and combating youth unemployment and poverty.
